Get out of my head!!

I was talking with a friend of mine the other day who was describing how the characters in her books demand her attention. They rattle around in her head, demanding that she give written words to their thoughts and histories and actions.

What she describes about her writing is very similar to what happens to me with craft projects. Instead of characters, it's an idea that demands that I bring it to fruition. I suppose that's inspiration. I've got plenty of it, folks. Granted, there are times when I sit down to make something and find the well has gone dry, but by and large I suffer from idea after idea after idea all waiting to just be created.

I swear, sometimes they multiply like bunnies, these ideas. A thought flashes through my head and the next thing I know, there's one more voice added to the chorus. Take this morning, for instance. I'm sitting in church, and my mind drifts for just a few seconds to the sweater I bought at a rummage sale yesterday. What it needs is a ruffle down the center placket. No, what it needs is a REMOVABLE ruffle down the center placket. And so now my mind is whirring in the background working out the logistics.

At some point there just gets to be too many voices, too many potential projects and I start to lose focus. "Get out of my head!" I want to say. But really, I like them in my head. I just wish they'd quiet down just long enough to get some of my responsible-person tasks out of the way. Does this ever happen to you? If so, how do you get the projects out of your head - or at least using their inside voices?

Toodles,

Haha, thats funny... I'm a writer (well, a wannabe writer) and what your friend says is exactly what its like for me. The conversations between two characters are the worst at making me look a little crazy when they start up!

I can imagine how you feel! My mom lives for her sewing machine and craft projects and that is always what it is like for her!

I know exactly what you mean! First you have some kind of idea and then the thoughts start racing...
I always try to have a notebook with me and a pencil to jot everything down, otherwise I would forget half of my ideas.
And at those times, when the "well is dry" I just browse my notebook for inspiration.
I also purchased a tiny voice recorder recently for times when carrying a notebook would be arkward. Whenever a thought pops into my head I simply record it and transfer it later on into my notebook.
That works for me :-)

I don't think I suffer from this "problem" nearly as much as you do, but sometimes it happens. I was going to say the same thing Katja said...make yourself a cute little inspiration notebook. I use one for scrapping. When I get too many ideas to do them all at once (like when I'm reading a magazine or surfing creative blogs) I just sketch ideas for later when I have time to do it.
Having 2 kids instead of 1 makes it much more likely, I think, that I will forget the idea before I find time to explore it.

I do not have this problem at all. In fact, I don't even have to generate ideas any more. If I'm ready for a new project and I don't have one waiting in the wings, all I have to do is call you, and your voices give me a dozen great ideas within about 3 minutes! :)
